Welcome from Dr. Chasse
|
As the leaves begin to turn, I am reminded of how blessed I am to be back in New Hampshire and I'd like to share some of my gratitude with you.
I want to share my sincere thanks to Dr. Thyr for trusting me with the health of so many wonderful people! I have had an amazing summer meeting many of you, learning about why you've come in to see Dr. Thyr and getting to know you during our visits.
I could never imagined that I would have the opportunity to work with such amazing, inspiring, and kind patients as you are! I look forward to working with you, and I am confident that we will have the opportunity to establish a potent healing relationship.
If I have not had the honor of meeting you yet, I would encourage you to schedule an appointment at our new clinic in Bedford. I've always thought that a perfect time to see a Naturopathic doctor is when you are healthy- we can establish what you are doing right, and discover ways to improve your health even more! Or maybe you'll save your visit for that first fall cold or flu (although if you follow the tips below, you may never catch that cold!)
Dr. Thyr and I both have your health care and well being as our top priority. Please call the office to make an appointment, or to address any concerns you have about your care. The contact info is:

School lunches that will make your kids cheer!!
|
Do your kids complain about their school lunches? Do you find it impossible to pack a lunch that is both healthy and delicious?
Use some of these tips to create healthy packed lunches that score a perfect ten with your kids!
Dips: Turn boring cut veggies into a favorite snack by including a choice of dips for your child. Try hummus, bean dips, or healthy dressings or surprise them with creamy nut butters for a special treat!
Don't be square: While a sandwich makes a good fallback, mix it up to keep things fresh. Try using a whole grain, corn, or brown rice tortilla to make a wrap with your favorite fillings. Or cut up chicken or meat from last night's leftovers into strips and make a great protein-packed finger food!
Snacks: Try to include a different fruit each day of the week- pick fruits in season or try something exotic, like fresh coconut. Consider dried fruits or fruit leather once in a while if there's nothing fresh in the house.
Keeping balance: When your kids are in school, eating healthy is so important for their optimal brain function. Avoid high sugar snacks and try to focus on getting a balance of healthy proteins, fats, and whole grains.

Recipe Corner: Dr. Chasse's delicous (and allergy-friendly) Thumbprint Cookies
|
This recipe has gone home with many patients after they discover they are allergic to gluten, eggs, dairy, or sugar. No one can believe they are allergen-friendly beause they taste soooooo good! Loaded with protein, they even make a good breakfast-to-go!
Ingredients: 2 cups organic raw almonds (to make 1 ½ cups almond flour) 1 ½ cups garbanzo bean flour ½ cup vegetable oil (safflower, sunflower, etc) ½ cup sweetener (agave nectar, maple syrup, brown rice syrup) water unsweetened jam of your choice
Directions 1. In a blender or food processor, grind almonds to make almond flour. You may choose to grind them to a fine consistency or leave larger pieces for a more chunky cookie. 2. Add garbanzo bean flour to mixture 3. Add vegetable oil and sweetener to mixture. Add water slowly until the mixture is a moist doughy consistency. (About ¼ cup). 4. Scoop dough 1tbsp at a time onto a oiled cookie sheet. Make a thumbprint in each cookie. Scoop ½ tsp of jam into the thumbprint. 5. Bake at 350 deg F for 9-11 minutes.
Favorites - Almond flour with apricot jam. - Substitute hazelnuts for the almonds and make with orange marmalade. You can even add some orange zest to the dough for an extra kick. - Substitute pecans for the almonds. Try with a berry jam, like raspberry.
Be creative! Enjoy!

Beat the Bug this year!
|
As the fall and winter greet us, so do the season's sniffles, coughs, and sneezes. Avoid the cold and flu this year with these immune-boosting tips!
Rest (ASAP!!!): Many people ignore the early warning signs of illness and keep working until they "drop". This allows the pathogen to multiply and gain a stronger foothold. If you feel symptoms beginning (sore throat, headache, congestion, fever, etc.), take it easy. Take a day off if possible, as this may prevent you from having to take three days off later on. Keep your bedroom cool and humid. If you are cold, add covers. If you are too warm, uncover or take a lukewarm bath. Humid air is helpful in keeping mucous membranes moist.
Exercise: Thousands of research articles have shown the many benefits of regular exercise. Did you know that boosting your immune system was one of them? Regular exercise (at least 30 minutes 5 times per week) will keep your immune system working at it's best and can be enough to keep you healthy, in more ways than one!!
Drink Plenty of Fluids: Drink large amounts of filtered water, herbal teas, broths and soups. Fruit juices and sweetened beverages (such as sodas) are not good choices, as their high sugar content will actually inhibit your immune cells from doing their respective jobs. If you do choose to drink fruit juices, dilute them with water (1:1). Avoid alcohol, coffee and black tea.
Onion Syrup Recipe: Onions and garlic are (delicious) foods that have antiviral and antibacterial action. To make this syrup, you need one large sliced onion, 2 sliced cloves of garlic, ¾ cup raw sugar (or honey). Layer the onion, garlic and sweetener alternately in a sealable glass jar. Let stand 2-3 days covered in a dark cabinet. Strain out the whole pieces of onion and garlic and keep sealed in a dark cabinet. Eat 1 tablespoon per day to prevent catching a cold.
Come in for a consultation: While these tips are great for general flu prevention, a lot more can be done. Make an appointment with Dr. Chasse for an individualized plan to support your immune system and keep you in tip top shape. Also, if you start to feel sick, come in as soon as you can. The earlier you start the treatments, the better they work, and the less time you have to feel ill. Call 603 647-0600 to make an appointment today!

As we welcome fall, remember that this is a time for quieting down and letting go. Allow your home to become dark as night sets in earlier. Plan a game night, or read by the fire with a cup of herbal tea. Try to let go of one of the unhealthy stressors in your life and spend more time on what matters most to you. Enjoy the peace of the season- the busy holidays will be here sooner than we know it!
