Chiropractic
What is Chiropractic?
According to the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.
Chiropractic was founded in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer, based on his assertion that most health problems could be prevented or treated using adjustments of the spine (spinal adjustments), and by adjustments of other joints as well, to correct what he termed vertebral subluxations. He, and later his son B.J. Palmer, proposed that subluxations were misaligned vertebrae which caused nerve compression that interfered with the transmission of Innate Intelligence (the body's ability to heal itself). As a result, the human body would experience "dis-ease" or disharmony which would result in loss of optimal health.
Dr. Larry Webster, Founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association discovered the Webster Technique as a safe means to restore proper pelvic balance and function for pregnant mothers. In expectant mothers presenting breech, there has been a high reported success rate of the baby turning to the normal vertex position. This technique has been successfully used in women whose babies present transverse and posterior as well. It has also successfully used with twins. Any position of the baby other than ROA may indicate the presence of sacral subluxation and therefore intrauterine constraint.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
A spinal adjustment is a highly specialized procedure your doctor of chiropractic uses to free your body from a serious form of health destroying stress called a subluxation. Your chiropractor is not really putting the bone back in place. The adjustment is unlocking the jammed vertebra and nearby tissues from their stuck or fixated positions which frees them to move where the body wants them to go.
Can chiropractic help your immune system?
YES! The health of your nervous system is directly connected to the health of your immune system. Vertebral subluxations cause spine and nerve stress that can greatly impair your immune function. Psychoneuroimmunology is continually revealing that the health of your brain, spinal cord and nerves deeply influences your physical and emotional health.
Why should I bring my child to the chiropractor?
Many parents understand the importance of regular checkups for their children's teeth, hearing and vision but don't understand the need for spinal checkups. Your child's spine can lose its natural alignment and develop subluxations as early as birth. Injuries can occur to a baby's spine at birth due to a breech presentation or difficult delivery that puts too much stress on the child's body. Health problems in childhood have been traced back to spinal damage at birth. Toddlerhood and childhood can be very physical times from learning to walk to riding a bicycle. Falls and accidents are inevitable. Most falls may be minor but they can cause spinal nerve damaging subluxations. Therefore, it is extremely important for children of all ages to have regular spinal checkups.
Should I see a chiropractor while I am pregnant?
If you are pregnant, one of the best things you can do is see a doctor of chiropractic. Chiropractic care provides so many things a pregnant body needs: a flexible and well balanced spine, hips and pelvis; internal organs without postural stress and freedom from nerve stress-all are essential for a healthy pregnancy and delivery.
