Acupuncture, Herbs, and Massage

A unique and custom designed acupuncture treatment will be created for your individual needs. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the oldest continuous systems of medicine in history, dating back over 3,000 years ago. It can be used to treat both acute and chronic ailments, strengthen the immune system as well as to relieve pain. Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of extremely fine needles into specific acupoints along the meridians (energetic pathways) of the body. The insertion of the needles signals the body to correct imbalances, and restore health and well-being. The needles are then manipulated manually or with a mild electrical current. Insertion is often painless and most patients report a deep sense of relaxation during their treatments.

Chinese Herbology

Chinese Herbal Medicine has always been an important element in TCM. It may greatly enhance the effects of your acupuncture treatments, especially in the treatment of chronic disease. Chinese herbal formulas consist of specific herbs chosen to enhance and balance each other, as they treat the underlying causes of your symptoms. Formulas may be administered in pills, ready-made tinctures, or powders that are mixed in water. Your practitioner will work with you to choose which form of herbs best suits your lifestyle.

The term “herbal medicine” refers to the use of plant’s seed, berries, roots, leaves, bark or flowers for medicinal purposes. Herbs and botanicals have been used in Asia for thousands of years to treat many different ailments. Herbal medicine has many less harmful side effects as western pharmaceuticals, and can target the root of your illness.

Massage and Other Therapies

While acupuncture is the most often practiced component of traditional Chinese medicine, it is only one of the components used to help facilitate healing. Along with acupuncture, Alyson incorporates adjunctive techniques such as acupressure and Moxibustion-warming an area or point with the herb mugwort. Massage and heat therapy work well to enhance your acupuncture experience and give you a truly relaxing treatment. If appropriate, your practitioner will provide a combination of Zen Shiatsu massage, tuina, gua sha, cupping or hot stone massage at the end of your treatment. Finally, diet and lifestyle changes, meditation and exercise are also encouraged.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Acupuncture work?

Traditional Chinese Medicine theory and modern Western Medicine offer two different views of how acupuncture works. The Chinese Medical Model believes that there is basic life energy, called “Qi” that flows through the body in certain channels called meridians. When Qi becomes blocked or disturbed due to certain stressors, body functions do not work properly. Acupuncture needles are inserted into certain points to help restore a normal balance and flow of energy in the body. Modern western medical research has shown that acupuncture works by allowing the body to release endorphins, natural pain killers that help reduce pain, stress and help to control regulatory systems in the body.

Are the needles safe and clean?

Yes, Alyson uses only sterile, single-use disposable needles for her acupuncture treatments. Because the needles are only used once and disposed of, there is no risk of infection. The needles are solid, small and hair-thin.

Does acupuncture hurt? What does it feel like?

Every individual has a unique and different acupuncture experience. Often times, there is only a very mild sensation upon insertion, or none felt at all. Once the needle is inserted, the practitioner will manipulate the needle to obtain a “Qi” sensation to help restore balance in the body. Most commonly a feeling of heaviness, or a spreading sensation is felt. It is very common for people to feel a deep sense of relaxation during treatment.

What do I wear for my treatment?

Please arrive at your acupuncture treatment with comfortable clothing that can be easily rolled up to the elbows and knees. Gowns are available if necessary.

What can I expect after a treatment?

In general, most patients start feeling the benefits of acupuncture after 2-3 treatments. If the problem is acute, sometimes improvement is felt after one treatment and may only need 3-5 treatments to resolve. Chronic health concerns may take many treatments to resolve. Acupuncture has a cumulative effect, so each treatment will build upon the other.
